Beginner’s Guide to a Raised Bed Cut Flower Garden

Beginner’s Guide to a Raised Bed Cut Flower Garden

Want a backyard bursting with colorful flowers you can cut and bring inside all summer? It is much easier than you think!

You don't need a green thumb or a massive yard. By using a simple raised bed and the right plants, you can grow a stunning "flower recipe" that blooms on repeat. Here is everything you need to know, explained simply.

Step 1: Find Your Growing Zone

Before buying anything, you need to know your USDA Plant Hardiness Zone. This number tells you exactly when it's safe to plant in your local weather.

How to find it: Go to the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map and type in your zip code.

Once you know your zone, you can check the back of seed packets to see exactly what month to plant them in your area!

Step 2: Grab the Gear

To keep things easy, start with a pre-made bed and the right food for your flowers.

  • The Garden Bed: Wooden raised beds are ideal because they look beautiful, drain water perfectly, and save your back from bending over.

  • The Fertilizer: Flower beds need a gentle food that prioritizes blooms over leaves. Look for an organic, slow-release fertilizer high in phosphorus (the middle number on the bag).

Step 3: Buy the Easiest Seeds

Stick to these "beginner-proof" flower varieties. They grow fast, love the sun, and look amazing together in a vase.

Step 4: When & How to Cut Your Flowers

Knowing when to harvest your flowers is the secret to making your homemade bouquets last a week or more inside.

HOW TO TEST IF A FLOWER IS READY:

[ Grab the stem about 8 inches below the flower and gently wiggle it ]
                                    |
                   ----------------------------------
                   | |
         [ Stem bends/floppy ] [ Stem stays stiff/sturdy ]
                   | |
DON'T CUT YET! READY TO HARVEST!
(Vase life will be short) (It will last long in water)

3 Quick Rules for Cutting:

  1. Cut in the Morning: Harvest your flowers early in the morning when the air is cool. The plants are full of water and won't wilt as easily.

  2. Cut at an Angle: Use sharp shears and cut the stem at a 45-degree angle. This helps the stem drink more water in the vase.

  3. Strip the Lower Leaves: Remove any leaves that would sit underwater in your vase. Leftover leaves in the water will rot and ruin your bouquet quickly.
